Praça da República Garden

This garden is a surprise to those who have the privilege of visiting it, for the feeling that time has stopped and Spring prolongs itself indefinitely invades us. We want to stay and spend time savouring the sensation of well-being and the discovery of this hidden garden.

Located behind the Baron of Calvário's former house, in Praça da República to be more precise, this garden is fused with the landscape and creates a whole with it, forming a sort of gazebo on the valley of the Cavalum River.

The garden, whose origin goes back to the 19th century, was recently subject to reorganization, presenting today a clear geometry, well defined by gardened bush areas decorated by vegetable elements, separated by granite paths and interrupted by small metal arcs covered with rose trees.

The flowers in the flowerbeds disclose the taste of those who keep everything with the certainty that the garden is a magic space of natural fronts, shapes and colours rivalling some elements worked in granite randomly placed in the garden.

Big trees (Cedrus atlantica) that grew along the wall attaining extraordinary heights create a shade and protection environment that alleviates the heat in the hottest days.

In the garden's edge, limited by a wall, is a strong pergola with granite pillars along which benches in the same material create small rest areas shadowed by wisterias and rose trees that call us to nest in their freshness.

Before arriving to this garden we cannot leave the house preceding it unnoticed. Despite all the urban pressure, this former villa from the property that used to spread all over the Cavalum's hillside still preserves all its nobility, with the granite paths and houses and austere façades, hiding a magnificent garden behind.

In the second half of the 19th century the city of Penafiel offered much construction, largely exceeding the local search. Some constructions had a greater impact, but only the house raised by Manuel Pereira da Silva in Calvário is still compulsory.

Considered as the best in the city, it was therefore requested to host D. Luís when he spent the night in Penafiel in 1872. Of scholar trait, the house forms a U with the patio faced towards the street. The ground central body for those who enter from the patio, corresponding to the noble floor, had another inferior floor where the farm dependencies were installed, also giving access to the garden.

The ensemble's imposing aspect comes mostly from the two story towers finished by urn-ornated railings flanking the portal that closes the patio.

This portal included two false windows and a high door finished by a triangular front upon which the sculptures of two big granite dogs sat. The openings were provided with cast iron railing, the gate bearing the proprietor's monogram.

This property, formerly owned by the Baron of Calvário, was acquired by the City Hall in the early 30s to host the court and some public houses. Recently, the building underwent severe remodelling to lodge the new Municipal Library.

Two paths divide the property and allow since this time the connection to Praça da República, inaugurated in June 17th 1930. On June 1st 1972, despite great controversy, a statue in the memory of Father Américo was placed in this garden.
